Roller Derby Trophies

I was at it again making MVP roller derby awards for a bout this past weekend.
If you want to take a look at awards past click here, here and here

Thee is something about making these awards that I love. For this particular bout, it was a double header. Our leagues travel B team, Wipeouts and Wasteland Derby Dames for the first game and the Topanga Maulrats and Reseda Wreckers, a home team rivalry for the second (I played in the second as a Topanga Maulrat)

All photos by Chuck Gay

There was no "real" theme so I just chose something from the Dollar Tree and went from there

I had spare wheels and asked my dad to make the stand. So he mounted them using a dowel rod. I originally found a dinosaur, but saw the robots and yeah?! who doesn't love robots?

We screwed the robot into the wheels and sprayed them gold. I love the way they came out.

For the second bout, which was near and dear to my heart and wanted to resemble both teams.

The Reseda Wreckers have a bomb (see above grey shirts) as a mascot.
I found these plastic ornaments at Michaels. My dad made the bottom  base with a groove and a cork for the "fuse." I painted the bombs black and base red for there colors. What do you think?

So, the rats were last and they were harder to think of because its not halloween and plastic rats are not readily available. So my hubby and I made the rats out of clay, yup clay. Sprayed them black and purple base. They were a little unstable and wet so I should have planned ahead. Oh well.

All the girls and there awards.
I really like making awards.
What do you think?

Roller derby awards: DC VS Marvel

So, I mentioned my first bout with my new team here in LA
in case you missed it, Here it is

Anyways, I was asked to make the trophies for the event
6 in total:
2- for best jammer
2- for best blocker
2- overall MVP

In going with the theme dc vs marvel comics I found these Spider-Man toys and the barbies at the dollar store, asked my league for extra old skate wheels, took everything to my dads and this is what we came up with..

My dad had extra wood in which he made the bases and the pole
And attached a dowel rod to the pole and made a hole in the skate

The Barbie has a welding rod up her but to keep her stable. They were spray painted appropriately and done. I loved making these guys.

Oh, the sounds of roller derby

Note to reader: Last night I went to a local derby bout and fell in love all over again, resulting in a  derby high.  These are my thoughts, feelings and what not from this bout and my derby experiences.

If you have never been to a roller derby bout (or game), you are missing out.
As most of you know, I have been playing roller derby for almost 2 years as Lucille Hardball.

Roller derby is not only a sport, but a new culture that is being unleashed into urban areas and taking the public by storm. Roller derby can be seen in current films, TV shows and even some magazines, commercials and local newspapers.

This is not the roller derby from the 60's, but a new generation of rules and attitude from the unique names, that some may refer to as crazy, to the booty shorts with fishnets.

While watching a bout you will be overwhelmed by the different sounds around you as well as the fierce scrambling of players throughout the pack (the area with the most amount of players not counting the jammers, stars on their heads) finding anyway within the rules to knock down or knock over players from the opposite teams. During the bout you hear the whistles, the yelling, the skates on the pavement, and the sporadic thuds of body parts hitting the ground followed by oohs and ahhs of the crowd.

In most cases, if you are not familiar with the strategy or how the game is played you will be confused by why the girls are moving that way and also mesmerized that you can accomplish "that" on skates. You will wonder how or even why someone skates and believe me everyone of those women has a story to tell that will inspire you to do the same.

As I sat and watched this game that I have become so absorbed in, I talked to my neighbor who played in the 1960's. The sport, attire, attitude, rules and aesthetic have all changed that she asks during a practice drill she asks if it has started yet. She is unaware of the new crazed hobby and what it all entails. She remembers the hay day of practices 6x a week and when falling meant the jam was over. It's amazing that people have come to know this ever evolving sport.

Have you ever been to a bout? Did you love it? Have you ever wanted to try it?

Roller derby trophies part II

So if you missed the post about last seasons trophies, go here

Well we had a mini season for the beginning of this year
I wound up making 1 trophy for MVP while my teammate, Tamale made the other 2

Here is how I did it..

I found this tutorial for these glasses with clay handles

so I painted my cup silver and took a piece of wood from Michaels and painted it 'Paign blue (my team) and added white stars (our thing) than started on the skate which is from the crayola clay magic

Once the skates dried I painted the skates to be a little more accurate and realistic

Added a few extra details and another skate and this is end product

What do you think?

roller derby trophies part 1

So last year (I know, I am catching up at a snail's pace) I was asked to make our teams end of the year party trophies for derby after seeing these halloween trophies

The halloween trophies were spontaneous and the dollar store and pinterest were to blame.

The trophies I decided to make were along the same lines, just using barbies instead of skeletons. I took the barbie and shaped her using a heat gun and attached her to a wooden stand. We did use some wire to keep her upright that spray painted her gold.

Once she was standing I added skates on her feet using clay and mini poly beads for the wheels. I had found these packs of miniature barbie accessories which included a helmet that i painted blue and glittered.

What do you think? I love these little things. Stay tuned for whats coming this season.

For the love of Derby

I have talked about derby quite a bit on here since Febuary.

It has encompassed my life outside of work and sometimes interferring with my love life with my husband. I have gone through many struggle emotionally, mentally and physically to keep going and to stay pumped about being on our local roller derby team.

On March 6th, I became a farmer
Read my story here

On May 17th I became a Rookie (ViceQuad)
Read my story here

I bouted
(twice.. I never recapped on the second one, sorry)

I have made life long friends

I have scrimmaged with my team
(this was the Vice Quads before our coming out scrimmage)

Well, as of yesterday 7/30/12
I have a new chapter to my Derby career
we (our league) had a draft of all Vice Quads and whomever wanted to be on a home team (we have 3 not including travel teams)
I got drafted to the 'Paign

This is what I wanted and I am so glad I could be on a team with such talented women and friends. My friend Ash (Smashmouth) got me into derby 2 years ago and now I get to play with her as a team mate.
I am still in shock, but oh so happy.

My first.. Derby

So this past weekend we (P and I) went up to Beloit, WI
For this mixer..

A mixer is when a bunch of teams from all over come and play together. There are some advantages and disadvantages, but ALOT of fun.

Beloit is about 3.5 hours away from us, so P wanted to fly. With a 7 hour round trip on top of an 8 hour round trip to get from work to home and back, he would have spent all weekend in a car. Which is evquvalent to driving with a 5 year old.

So we rented the above plane to get to the bout, yup I have my own personal private pilot :)
There were 3 bouts: all ladies, fresh meat (me) and a co-ed

These are pictures of me jamming the B&W one is my favorite

The Jammer (star helmet cover) is the one who scores points
I scored for my team, even though we lost.

It was still a fun time.
I can;t wait to play again.. yay!
